QSL hosts Benchmarking Quantum Advantage workshop

From March 24th to 26th, the Quantum Software Lab hosted an international workshop focused on quantum computing benchmarks, in line with one of the QSL’s core missions.

Bringing together a group of 10 domain experts spanning industry and academia, alongside an audience of 30 attendees, organizers Raul Garcia-Patron (senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh) and Pauline Besserve (research associate at the Quantum Software Lab) sought to create an environment where participants could engage with cutting edge topics in quantum computing benchmarking.


With over three days of carefully curated presentations, as well as time for conversation between participants and a closing panel session, the Benchmarking Quantum Advantage workshop offered a much-needed space to explore the current landscape of quantum computing, strengthen ties within the community and allow new ideas to emerge organically.


Lively discussions about the evolution of the field, the broader impact of research on society, and the critical role of transparent communication highlighted just how pivotal benchmarking quantum advantage has become in driving quantum computing forward.

  • Martin Kliesch (Hamburg University of Technology) - Sound and self-consistent certification of quantum computers at the gate level;

  • Joseph Emerson (University of Waterloo) - Circuit benchmarking: efficient validation for any NISQ or LEGIT quantum computation;

  • Abhinav Kandala (IBM Quantum) - More evidence for the utility of quantum computing before fault tolerance;

  • Jens Eisert (Freie Universität Berlin) - Five theses on benchmarking quantum advantages;

  • Robin Harper (The University of Sydney) - Probing the noise characteristics of IBM’s latest quantum devices;

  • Robin Blume-Kohout (Quantum Performance Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories) - Benchmarking Quantum Computers;

  • James Seddon (Phasecraft) - Lindbladian fitting methods for noisy quantum gates using spam- and shot-noise-robust logarithm search;

  • Thomas Ayral (Eviden) - Benchmarking many-body problems, classical and quantum;

  • Pauline Besserve, Kenza Hammam (QSL) - Entropy benchmarking of near-term circuits;

  • Harold Ollivier (Ecole Normale Superieure (Universite PSL - INRIA)) - Verification-inspired benchmarking;

  • Zoltán Zimborás (HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics)- Myths around quantum computation before full fault tolerance;

  • Panel session: Robin Blume-Kohout, Abhinav Kandala, Karl Mayer, Zoltán Zimborás, chaired by Raul Garcia-Patron.
